IDEAS
CATEGORIES OF DISAGREEMENT
- ) Misunderstanding – Disagreements are misunderstandings. When everyone understands your points, feelings, intentions, reasons, etc. misunderstandings never take place. Misunderstanding occurs when a person interprets your feelings, intentions, etc. differently. This is common among family members, friends, and co-workers.
- ) Negotiable Disagreements – There is no misunderstanding here between you and others. You just disagree with them. However, the solution is negotiable. You are willing or the other party is willing to negotiate or compromise. This is common in a business setting.
- ) Non-negotiable disagreements – There is no misunderstanding here but unfortunately there is no negotiation because of each person’s absolute perspectives, standards, and requirements of something. This is common among politicians or supporters of a certain political party.

INTERACTIVE SAMPLE MONOLOGUE
NOTE: The highlighted words below give emphasis to LEXICAL RESOURCE (advanced words, collocations, natural expressions, & cohesive devices) or the GRAMMATICAL RANGE and ACCURACY (i.e. the use of intermediate or advanced sentence construction correctly).
I had a serious disagreement with my mom when I was about to finish high school many years ago. The disagreement stemmed (caused by) from my decision not to heed her advice about studying a business course. My mom has been working as an accountant and at the same time running (managing) her own business.
She wanted me to take up a business course so that one day she could turn over (to give something that you control to someone else) her business to me. I actually told her that I wanted to study a medical course because I did believe that it’s more fulfilling than managing a family business. Ever since I was a kid, I did imagine myself working at a hospital. I got inspired by nurses and doctors who helped their patients recover from their illnesses. I felt like medical professionals were powerful and that made me convince to study a medical-related course.
However, my mom didn’t really like what she’s hearing from me then. She imposed (to force the acceptance of something) her opinions on me about the amazing benefits of managing one’s business. I let it pass (to not react to something that someone says) because I had so much respect for my mom. On the next day, she seriously talked with me while we’re having lunch and again persuaded (convinced) me to study business in college instead of studying a medical course. She’s like a broken record (someone keeps saying the same thing over and over again) convincing me of the importance of owning a business. I got fed up (annoyed or upset) and I couldn’t help myself but expressed my exasperation (irritation, annoyance) and somehow raised my voice. I told her that I wanted to pursue what my heart desired and not what she wanted me to become. When she heard me saying that, she’s at a loss for words (unable to think of anything to say) because of surprise for talking back (to reply rudely). She didn’t expect me to do that because that’s not really my personality. More often than not, I was calm, cool, and collected (not very bothered by things) then.
Because of her surprise, she left me at the dining table and went to her room. We didn’t talk for several days and what happened after was…
