IELTS WRITING: EXTINCTION OF NUMEROUS ANIMALS

IELTS WRITING Task 2:

Numerous animal species worldwide are currently facing extinction. Some argue that countries and individuals should prioritize protecting these animals, while others believe resources should be focused more on human issues. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

SAMPLE ESSAY

Although it is argued by some that the government of each country and its people should give the protection of endangered animals in the world a priority, other people believe that government resources should be spent on addressing (giving attention to or dealing with a problem) the pressing (urgent and need to be dealt with) issues that humankind is experiencing. In my opinion, utilizing government resources to resolve social issues must be prioritized.

On the one hand, some people believe that government resources should be allocated (to give an amount of time, money, etc.) to address human issues such as poverty, war, unemployment,  and discrimination against gender, race, or religious beliefs, and I agree. These problems that people face in their everyday lives stop them from living safely and comfortably. Thus, they are immobilized (preventing someone or something from being able to move or operate) to reach their full potential as citizens in their respective countries. In other words, they cannot contribute more value to society such as helping the government in protecting endangered animals simply because they are more focused on their own challenges. For example, the majority of people in undeveloped or developing nations do not care about environmental preservation or conservation as they give more importance to survival.

On the other hand, it is argued by some people that each country in the world and its citizens should give the protection of animals that are on the brink of extinction (at the point when almost not exist) a priority. That is, the government resources should be spent on building more zoos that would safely house those animals. In addition, the government must implement a curriculum in every school that would educate young people about the importance of environmental conservation or wildlife protection.  Furthermore, scientists or conservationists (people who advocate or act for the protection and preservation of the environment and wildlife) should work with the government to study the breeding process of those animals so they can understand how to help those animals reproduce.

In conclusion, while people may vary in their opinions, I think that the utilization (the action of making practical and effective use of something) of government resources in resolving human issues that restrict them from living safely, comfortably, and meaningfully is more important and saving those endangered animals becomes natural among citizens once their welfare (well-being) is secured.
