IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: PAPER [ANSWERS]

Have you made any crafts with paper? Well, not lately, but in the past, especially when I was just a grader, I was into origami. I remember folding paper cranes, boats, and planes during my free time. That was my way of entertaining myself as my parents didn't allow me to play computer or mobile games.

Study the sample answers below about the recent topic in IELTS Speaking Part 1: Paper. Learn how the speaker develops his answers, targeting the criteria: Grammatical Range and Accuracy, Lexical Resource, and Fluency and Coherence.

PART 1

PAPER

ANSWERS

Have you made any crafts with paper?

Answer 1

Well, not lately, but in the past, especially when I was just a grader, I was into (very interested in) origami. I remember folding paper cranes, boats, and planes during my free time. That was my way of entertaining myself as my parents didn’t allow me to play computer or mobile games.

Answer 2

Not really, crafting has never been my forte (strong point). Although I learned a lot about it in my art class, I didn’t develop any skill in it. I believe I wasn’t gifted with that kind of talent, and because of that, I really look up to (admire) those people who are very good at handcrafting.

What did you like to do with paper as a child?

Answer 1

As I said, I loved making paper airplanes, paper boats, and paper cranes. I was very good at it! In fact, I made money out of it during Teacher’s Day. I made flowers out of paper and sold them to my classmates on Teacher’s Day since they did not bring anything that they could give to our teachers. I was on a high (feeling extremely happy and excited) when I made my own money using my art skills.

Answer 2

Well, I wasn’t good at making origami, or anything like that, but thankfully, I could doodle. So, whenever I felt bored, I just got my pen and paper and started doodling. I just let my imagination run wild (to allow my thoughts, ideas, and fantasies to flow freely without limits).

Do you still write physical letters?

Answer 1

Honestly, and sadly, not anymore. Whenever I want to greet someone on their special day, I just send them a message via WhatsApp or Messenger. I know it would be nice if  I could write a letter and send it to them since it’s more personal, but with my current situation, I don’t have the luxury of time (not having enough time). I’m just extremely busy.

Answer 2

Yes, I do. I love sending birthday cards and letters to my friends and loved ones. I’m an old-fashioned (traditional) guy; I enjoy writing my well-wishes to someone with a pen. I like the idea that they would realize that they’re special to me.

Do people still keep handwritten letters today?

Answer 1

Yes, I believe some people do despite the fact that we’re living in a digital age. Some people love to give and receive handwritten letters as they carry a certain emotional weight that a text message simply can’t replicate (to make an exact copy).

Answer 2

Based on my observation, I don’t think it’s a common practice anymore. Most people have shifted (changed) to digital communication since it’s more convenient and fast, and because of that, it’s so rare to receive handwritten letters; therefore, there’s nothing to keep. Unlike in the past, when that was the only way to communicate with friends and loved ones, people could truly keep those letters they received.

Do you carry paper and pens with you when you go out?

Answer 1

Not really, I rely on my phone for almost everything these days. I have a notepad application on my phone where I can jot down (to write something quickly) some important notes and reminders and set an alarm to remind me of the things that I have to do during the day. I believe I’m the same as many people these days.

Answer 2

Yes, I still do it. Call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer physically writing down important points in a notebook or journal rather than typing them. Doing that helps me keep my brain active, and it easily makes me remember things.
