IELTS WRITING: LANGUAGE EDUCATION

IELTS WRITING Task 2:

When it comes to language education, there are differing opinions. Some believe that small class sizes are ideal for language learning, while others contend that the number of students does not impact the learning experience significantly. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

SAMPLE ESSAY

Although some people believe that learning a language is more effective when the number of students in a class is limited, others think that the class size does not affect the learning experience of students. In my opinion, language learning is more effective when the language teacher has a few students in a class.

To begin with, there are some people who believe that students can learn a language more effectively when the class is not crowded (filled with many people) with learners and I agree. It is always true that a language class with only a few students produces learners who develop their oral and written communication skills faster. This is simply because a language teacher can focus on each learner’s needs in the class. That is, he can easily address (to deal with) the weaknesses of each student and develop a strategy exclusively designed for each student’s weaknesses. Moreover, the students have more opportunities to interact with their teacher because the teacher’s attention is not divided into numerous times. Thus, they can easily speak with their teacher comfortably or ask for immediate guidance when they need it, and because of that, they can learn better.

However, some people think that class size is not an issue in language learning because they believe that the effectiveness of learning a language depends on the teacher’s ability and the student’s willingness to learn. They believe that when a teacher is skillful enough or equipped (endowed with knowledge and skills) with effective teaching methodologies, students will learn even if the number of them in the class is not controlled. In addition, they think that a student’s desire to learn a language plays an important role in learning. In other words, when the student is willing to learn a language, he will acquire the language skills even if he is in a class where there are numerous (very many) students.

To conclude, language learning is effective for some people when there is a limit of students attending the class, however, there are those who argue with that idea as they believe that the effectiveness of language learning relies (depends) on the teacher’s skills and the student’s willingness to learn.
