IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: DREAM JOB [ANSWERS]

What was your dream job when you were young? When I was a kid, all I wanted was to become a cashier. Thatโ€™s because I was fascinated by the cash register that had a lot of money. Back then, I thought that the money in that machine was for the cashier. Thinking about it now really amuses me.ย

Talking about a dream job in your IELTS Speaking exam is easy when you have ideas, and you know some topic vocabulary words to use, or some idiomatic language to express your ideas more effectively.

Some common examples of dream jobs are nurses, doctors, teachers, and engineers, among others. When talking about your dream job, make sure to use topic words related to the job that you choose to show your vocabulary skills. That’s one good way to increase your score in the criterion, Lexical Resource.ย

Here are natural and high-band sample answers with advanced vocabulary and natural phrasing to help you sound fluent, confident, natural, and conversational. These responses are tailored for real IELTS test scenarios, including personalized examples that make you communicate as if you’re not taking the IELTS Speaking test, but you’re casually having a conversation with your examiner.ย

In this post, youโ€™ll learn:

  • How to structure a high-scoring answer (with 2 real examples).
  • IELTS-specific vocabulary to boost your Lexical Resource score.
  • Complex and compound sentences to vary your sentence structures and grammar so you can get a higher score in the criterion, Grammatical Range and Accuracy.ย
  • Natural and conversational answers that examiners prefer over memorized or template replies.ย

Letโ€™s dive into the sample answers!

PART 1

ย

DREAM JOB

What was your dream job when you were young? ย

(Answer 1)

ย (Smiling) When I was a kid, all I wanted was to become a cashier. Thatโ€™s because I was fascinated by the cash register (drawer for cash) that had a lot of money. Back then, I thought that the money in that machine was for the cashier. Thinking about it now really amuses (entertains) me.ย  ย

(Answer 2)

I vividly (clearly) remember wanting to be a doctor. My mom was hospitalized, and her doctor helped her tremendously (to a great extent). So, I thought to myself that I wanted to be like him, helping patients recover from their illnesses.ย  ย

How did you change your mind about your dream? ย

(Answer 1)

Well, as I got older and learned that the money in the cash register was not for the cashier, I realized that I couldnโ€™t be a cashier. Well, children donโ€™t understand how the world works, and I was a child back then, so it was normal for a kid like me to think that cashiers had all the money in the world, and that made me think of becoming one.ย  ย

(Answer 2)

When I got mature, I realized that I was not smart enough to study medicine. I didnโ€™t have good study habits, Iโ€™m not patient enough, and my interest is in numbers. So, I studied accountancy and became an accountant. Well, Iโ€™m happy and content with my vocation (calling).ย  ย

What do you plan to do in the future? ย

(Answer 1) ย

I really want to start my own business because I donโ€™t like my current job. I hate it, especially when thereโ€™s so much workload. I feel so stressed out since I have to achieve certain metrics every month. Honestly, Iโ€™m just staying in this company because I get paid well.ย  ย

(Answer 2) ย

I plan to work as a freelancer in the future. I want to be my own boss. Iโ€™m thinking of offering my services to different companies, as I believe I can make more than being tied to a company. I hope I can make that happen before I turn 35.ย  ย

What kinds of jobs are popular in your country? ย

(Answer 1) ย

Itโ€™s mostly jobs in the healthcare industry. Thatโ€™s simply because primarily medical students or professionals dream of migrating to another country. They first gain experience in our country, and leave for another country as they want to earn more, and more importantly, they aim to get a residence status abroad.ย  ย

(Answer 2) ย

I think jobs related to computers or information technology because these jobs are in demand these days. People want to get jobs in this industry because they can earn better than in other jobs. Also, government jobs are popular because of stability.ย  ย  ย
