IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: HAVING A BREAK [ANSWERS]

How often do you take a rest or a break? As I’m very busy at work, I only have an hour break for my lunch, and unfortunately, sometimes, that one hour break is reduced to 30 minutes. I know it’s very unhealthy, but I can’t complain since my work pays my never-ending bills, plus, I get to buy the things that I need and want.

Talking about resting or having a break in your IELTS Speaking exam is easy when you have ideas, and you know some topic vocabulary words to use, or some idiomatic language to express your ideas more effectively.

Here are natural and high-band sample answers with advanced vocabulary and natural phrasing to help you sound fluent, confident, natural, and conversational. These responses are tailored for real IELTS test scenarios, including personalized examples that make you communicate as if you’re not taking the IELTS Speaking test, but you’re casually having a conversation with your examiner.

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • How to structure a high-scoring answer (with 2 real examples).
  • IELTS-specific vocabulary to boost your Lexical Resource score.
  • Complex and compound sentences to vary your sentence structures and grammar so you can get a higher score in the criterion, Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
  • Natural and conversational answers that examiners prefer over memorized or template replies.

Let’s dive into the sample answers!

PART 1

HAVING A BREAK OR

TAKING A REST

How often do you take a rest or a break?

(Answer 1)

As I’m very busy at work, I only have an hour break for my lunch, and unfortunately, sometimes, that one hour break is reduced to 30 minutes because of too much workload. I know it’s very unhealthy, but I can’t complain since my work pays my never-ending bills, plus, I get to buy the things that I need and want.

(Answer 2)

Normally, I have an hour break at work, as that’s required by labor laws. So, during that break, I take a nap for about 15 minutes, then I eat my lunch. However, if it’s my day off, I usually sleep for more than eight hours and then have a nap after lunch. It’s my way of recharging my batteries (regain one’s strength and energy).

What do you usually do when you are resting?

(Answer 1)

On my days off, I sleep like a log (sleep very soundly). As I said, my job is pretty demanding, which means I’m pretty exhausted mentally and physically, so the only way to regain my strength is to sleep a lot. Also, if I take a leave from work for a week or two, I travel, as it’s a great way to switch my work brain off.

(Answer 2)

Well, at work, I do stretching from time to time, drink some coffee, and stand for a few minutes near a window while watching people walking outside. It’s a simple way to clear my head. And on my days off, I don’t do anything except sleep, and I know that I deserve it.

Do you take a nap when you are taking your rest?

(Answer 1)

Yes, whenever I have the opportunity, I take a power nap (a short sleep in order to restore one’s mental alertness). Doing so helps me feel re-energized, and that has a positive impact on my productivity. But these days, I haven’t done that since there’s so much on my plate (to have a lot of work) in the office.

(Answer 2)

Absolutely! I always believe that napping improves focus. A ten-minute nap works wonders (to have a very beneficial effect on someone), that’s why I always have that at work before I have my lunch, so that I’ll be able to continue working more efficiently.

How do you feel after taking a nap?

(Answer 1)

Of course, it feels good! I feel more active and ready to continue my work, which increases my productivity. However, if I’m at home and I take a nap, it makes me feel groggy (weak; unable to think clearly or walk correctly) afterward since I don’t have the motivation to move around my house.

(Answer 2)

I feel rejuvenated (revitalized)! Well, I think everyone feels the same way, because napping is clearing one’s head. When one is engrossed (having all one’s attention or interest absorbed by someone) in so many things like work and family, he can’t think well, and he simply loses concentration.  So, the best way to improve that condition is to take a nap.
