IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: HOMETOWN [ANSWERS]

PART 1

YOUR HOMETOWN OR

BIRTHPLACE

ANSWERS

What is the name of your hometown?

Well, this is my hometown, Ulaanbaatar, I was born and raised here. As you may have observed, this is not a typical metropolis where it’s packed with people and where the problem of pollution is a nightmare. This place is laid-back with scenic views.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Metropolis [noun] – capital city; a large city

Packed with people [phrase] – crowded; many people

The problem of pollution is a nightmare [idiom] – the problem is serious or terrible

Laid-back [adj.] – relaxed Scenic [adj.] – impressive; picturesque

Note: The speaker is taking the exam in his own hometown.

Do you like your hometown?

Honestly, I couldn’t ask for more living in this magnificent place. This city is safe, people are hospitable and genuine, and the food is incredibly affordable unlike other cities in the world where I have traveled, which cost you an arm and a leg. Also, this place is rich in superb scenery, I can say this is paradise!

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Couldn’t ask for more [idiom] – something is so good that you can’t ask for anything better

Incredible [adj.] – unbelievable

Cost an arm and a leg [idiom] – very expensive

Superb [adj.] – very good; excellent

What is the most interesting thing about your hometown?

I believe it’s the coldness of the winter season. Since this city is surrounded by several mountains, we can experience a temperature ranging from -20 to -40 degrees and that’s really horrible. In spite of that, if you’re a nature lover person, you’ll surely love the jaw-dropping landscapes during winter, it’s like every corner is spectacular!

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Horrible [adj.] – awful; unpleasant

In spite of (that) [preposition] – although; even though

Jaw-dropping [adj.] – amazing

Landscape [noun] – scenery

Spectacular [adj.] – dramatically beautiful

Would you recommend your hometown to foreign travelers?

Yes definitely! Actually, my country itself is not yet prominent among travelers. I read some articles online that foreign people branded my country as The Land of Nowhere which I can really understand since we’re not known in the world. I want travelers to witness how magnificent my country is, especially my hometown. I want them to know that there’s more to this place than meets the eye.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Prominent [adj.] – famous; popular

Branded [verb] – labeled; called

More to (something) than meets the eye [idiom] – having more value/beauty than what it appears to be

Julius M.

Author, Band 9.0 Achiever (First Attempt - IELTS Speaking)

Hi students! My name is Julius. I am the author of this IELTS website. I am a non-native English speaker who achieved the highest band score (band 9.0) on the IELTS speaking test on my first attempt.

I graduated with a degree in Communication Arts from Cebu Normal University, one of the prestigious state universities in the Philippines. I am a licensed teacher and TESOL-certified.

I once worked at a UK-based company teaching business English to Japanese businessmen who primarily work at Nikkei, a popular media company in Japan.

I created this website to help you all achieve your desired band scores so you will NOT waste so much money, time, and effort for retaking the exam numerous times. All of the sample answers I provided on this website are a product of my experience as a band 9.0 achiever and an experienced IELTS speaking coach.

I've made sure that all of the sample answers are developed in a conversational and natural way because that is how I achieved a crisp band 9.0.

Be one of the many students who achieved their target band scores by utilizing this website as one of the learning resources!
