IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: INSECTS [ANSWERS]

PART 1

INSECTS

ANSWERS

Do you like insects?

(Answer 1)

Well, not all kinds of insects!  There are some that I adore like ladybird beetles, butterflies, dragonflies, and fireflies for one obvious reason – they bring beauty to the environment. In fact, they’re commonly the subjects of my photographs!

(Answer 2)

Not at all! I’m sorry to say that! Just hearing the word insect gives me chills and thinking about those cockroaches, beetles, and wasps is hair-raising. I can’t stand those kinds of insects.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

  Adore [verb]- love

Gives me chills [expression] – a psychological response that makes a person shiver

Hair-raising [adj.] – terrifying

Cannot stand with [idiom] – can’t bear

TIPS

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker gave a direct answer by stating that he didn’t like all kinds of insects not all kinds of insects. Then, he talked about those insects that he loved and provided his reason. In that way, he’s already adding many topic vocabulary words that helped him express his answer better. In addition, to make his answer a bit longer, he talked about his hobby of photography and connected it to his answer. It’s a great way to wrap up his answer naturally.

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker gave a  direct ‘no’ answer and expressed his feelings about insects. He enumerated several kinds of insects that made him feel uncomfortable. Mentioning those types of insects helped him extend his answer in a more natural way.

Do you think insects are useful?

Yes, they are, I think every living organism in this world has its purpose. I don’t think they exist for nothing. For instance, butterflies pollinate plants; bees produce honey that we all love eating, these kinds of insects really serve a purpose for both the environment and humans. Well, as for other insects, like those that people loathe, I just don’t have any idea of their purpose or use.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Living organism [noun] – anything that has life

Pollinate [verb] – move the pollen from one plant to another in order to reproduce

Produce [verb] – create; make

Serve a purpose [expression] – be useful

Loathe [verb] – hate

TIP

i.) The speaker gave a direct positive answer to the question and expressed his opinion stating that each living thing has a special purpose on Earth. After that, he gave two examples to support his argument. Then, ended his answer by saying that he didn’t know the purpose of other insects. It’s a good way to end his answer as he considered other insects as well.

What kinds of insects make some people scared?

Oh, that’s a no-brainer question! Most people are frightened of cockroaches and whenever they see one, they usually scream at the top of their lungs, and men are no exemption from that. Funnily enough, some men, even those muscular men or manly men, are incredibly frightened of those insects. Also, I think hornets are scary because their sting is life-threatening.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

 No-brainer [noun] – very easy

Frightened [adj.] – afraid; anxious

At the top of one’s lungs [expression] – very loudly

Funnily enough [expression] – strangely in a way that is surprising

Hornet [noun] – a kind of a large wasp

Life-threatening [adj.] – potentially fatal

TIP

i.) The speaker started answering the question by using a natural expression that helped him sound very confident in answering the question. Then he proceeded to answering by mentioning one kind of insect that most people were afraid of. To make his answer interesting, he added humor to it by mentioning that even strong men were afraid of cockroaches. Finally, he added another kind of insect to answer the question completely as he was asked to give a ‘plural’ answer, so two kinds of insects are enough to answer the question thoroughly.

Are there many different insects in the place where you live?

(Answer 1)

Yes, there are but only beautiful and endearing insects like butterflies and dragonflies. I don’t see those insects that are frightening since our house and our backyard are regularly treated with insecticides.

(Answer 2)

Well, there are but not all the time, I can see some flies, especially fruit flies during summertime and they are really irritating. Also, some mosquitoes appear during that time. So our local government makes an effort to control the spread of those insects in our community every summer.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Endearing [adj.] – cute;  adorable; lovely

Insecticide [noun] – a chemical substance made for killing insects

Irritating [adj.] – annoying

TIPS

i.) ANSWER 1:  The speaker answered positively and focused his answer by talking about the insects that he adored. Then, he added his answer by stating that he couldn’t see some insects that were scary due to the fact that they used some chemicals to kill those kinds of insects. Simple answer and very direct!

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker gave a positive answer but did not say a common yes. Then he talked about two specific insects which seasonally appeared in their place. He simply ended his answer by stating what the local government usually did to minimize those kinds of insects. Notice how he answered naturally using those topic vocabulary words.

In case you don’t have enough ideas about insects, here are the other types that you can use when answering questions in IELTS Speaking Part 1 Insect:

-Grasshopper

-Flea

-Preying Mantis

-Termite

-Cricket

-Botfly

-Aphid
