IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: PUBLIC PLACES [ANSWERS]

Have you ever talked with someone you don’t know in public places? Yes, and I like it very much. I enjoy talking with strangers as I get to learn many things from them. Besides, it’s great to talk with those types of people since there’s no judgment. I often talk with strangers when I’m in a long queue or when I’m at a station. It’s a good way to pass the time.

Talking about public places in your IELTS Speaking exam is easy when you have ideas, and you know some topic vocabulary words to use, or some idiomatic language to express your ideas more effectively. Public places, such as parks, malls, playgrounds, and the like, can be topic vocabulary words you can use in your answers.

Here are natural and high-band sample answers with advanced vocabulary and natural phrasing to help you sound fluent, confident, natural, and conversational. These responses are tailored for real IELTS test scenarios, including personalized examples that make you communicate as if you’re not taking the IELTS Speaking test, but you’re casually having a conversation with your examiner.

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • How to structure a high-scoring answer (with 2 real examples).
  • IELTS-specific vocabulary to boost your Lexical Resource score.
  • Complex and compound sentences to vary your sentence structures and grammar so you can get a higher score in the criterion, Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
  • Natural and conversational answers that examiners prefer over memorized or template replies.

Let’s dive into the sample answers!

PART 1

PUBLIC PLACES

Have you ever talked with someone you don’t know in public places?

(Answer 1)

Yes, and I like it very much. I enjoy talking with strangers as I get to learn many things from them. Besides, it’s great to talk with those types of people since there’s no judgment. I often talk with strangers when I’m in a long queue or when I’m at a station. It’s a good way to pass the time (to do something to keep busy while waiting).

(Answer 2)

Yes, but not too often, because I’m shy. I always struggle to initiate (to start) a conversation with a stranger in a public place. For some reason, I get tongue-tied (too shy to speak); I just don’t know what to say. Just this morning, I wanted to ask the lady at the reception about the location of the function room where the exam is held, but no words came out of my mouth.

Do you wear headphones in public places?

(Answer 1)

Not at all. I have to make sure that I’m aware of my surroundings, so that in case of emergencies or unwanted incidents, I can easily react appropriately. For instance, a jogger could have avoided an accident if he had only heard the car horn when it was still a minute away before it hit him. I know that example is extreme, but that’s a possibility.

(Answer 2)

Yes, especially if I’m on a train. I don’t like hearing people’s chatter (chitchat; gossip); I just want to listen to music to relax after working for hours, or listen to a podcast and learn something valuable.

Would you like to see more public places near where you live?

(Answer 1)

Yes definitely! I would love to see a playground for children, a park where people can hike and exercise using the provided exercise equipment, and more green spaces, so I can be close to nature. Sadly, our town doesn’t have any of these.

(Answer 2)

I’m lucky because our town has green spaces where people can spend time relaxing and hiking, and the kids can enjoy playing with those monkey bars, swings, and slides. But I think it would be nice if our town had a public library. That’s just lacking in our town, which I hope the local government can consider building one.

Do you often go to public places with your friends?

(Answer 1)

Rarely. If I go to public places, such as a park, a library, and a mall, I usually do it on my own. I dunno know, I just enjoy spending quality time by myself; it gives me peace of mind and focus. I only visit such public places with my friends if I get an invite from them.

(Answer 2)

Yes, I do. Just a few days ago, my friends and I had a picnic at a park nearby, and we had a good time catching up (talking with someone who has not been seen for a while). And this weekend, we will go shopping at the newly opened shopping mall. We’re looking forward to it because it’s been ages since we went out shopping together.
