IELTS WRITING: GENERAL EDUCATION vs SPECIFIC CLASSES

in TASK 2 ESSAY

IELTS Writing Task 2:

In some countries, secondary schools aim to provide a general education across a range of subjects. In other countries, children focus on a narrow range of subjects related to a particular career. Which do you think is appropriate in today’s world?

SAMPLE ESSAY

Some countries in the world give more importance to general education for secondary school students while some other countries prioritize providing specific classes that lead students to acquire (obtain) certain types of jobs. In my opinion, studying particular subjects or skills-focused classes is more suitable (appropriate) for this generation.

Nowadays, the majority of employers in different industries value (give importance to) those job applicants who have specific skills that are useful in their organizations. They look for job seekers who have indispensable (absolutely necessary) skills such as computer skills, public speaking skills, organizational skills, and sales and marketing skills. Thus, secondary school students have to focus on learning very specific classes that will train them to develop important skills needed in the company. In this way, they will not have a hard time securing (getting) a job once they decide to work after they complete their secondary school.

Moreover, when secondary schools focus on providing specific classes to students instead of making them learn general subjects, the students will be able to make use of their time wisely. That is, they will not be distracted by things that are not related to what they are studying and they will give their absolute attention to the subjects that they enjoy studying. Undeniably, it is common for students to lose focus on their studies when they have so many subjects or school activities to work on (to spend time improving something). So, by focusing on specific subjects or skills-based subjects, they will utilize their time more productively and develop skills faster.

In conclusion, it is better for secondary school students to focus on learning specific subjects that will help them secure jobs easily as it is more suitable in this generation that values skills more.
