IELTS WRITING: INCREASE IN ECONOMIC WEALTH

IELTS WRITING Task 2:

When a country is already rich, any additional increase in economic wealth does not make its citizens happier. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ESSAY

It is believed that citizens in a wealthy country do not feel happier even if their country achieves more economic progress. I partly agree with this idea since financial gains are not always the metric (measurement) of happiness.

Normally, when a rich country becomes richer because of well-implemented economic policies, its citizens become happy since their lives improve significantly in so many ways. That is, their purchasing power (the financial ability to buy) becomes stronger since they have more money to dispose of. They can easily acquire (obtain) more material things or any valuable thing that can make them feel satisfied. In addition to that, their government can develop more accessible facilities that they can enjoy, or create some helpful programs that can simply make the lives of its people more convenient and satisfactory. For example, a wealthier government can provide more modernized public transportation, free and accessible healthcare, free university education, and even eradicate  (eliminate) income tax. All these things bring convenience and satisfaction to every citizen and these certainly make them happy.

However, the wealth of a country does not always guarantee its citizens a happier life. While it is true that the acquisition (the act of acquiring something) of wealth makes them happy, wealth is not the ultimate (final) tool that can make them feel more fulfilled. It is the relationships with other people that can give them a more meaningful and happier life. For example, some people in wealthier countries are the loneliest due to depression and other mental health issues, despite having good financial resources or the conveniences that their country provides. This is because of the individualistic culture (the prioritization of the individual over the entire group) that is commonly cultivated in wealthier countries. A number of people living in those countries long for (seek for) a meaningful relationship yet it is a complete challenge to build one. Hence, they feel empty and unhappy when they fail to develop a valuable relationship.

In conclusion, the happiness of every citizen in a wealthier country does not solely (only) depend on the financial resources that they can obtain in their own country but meaningful relationships are also an important factor that can make them happier and even more fulfilled (satisfied).
