IELTS WRITING: MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES & GLOBALIZATION

IELTS WRITING Task 2:

The increasing presence of multinational companies and globalization is believed by some to have positive implications for everyone involved. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ESSAY

The existence of international companies operating in different parts of the world is the result of globalization and this provides benefits for the countries and their people where these businesses run (operate). While I agree that globalization is beneficial, the downsides (the negative aspects of something) of it must not be downplayed (to make something appear less important than it really is)

Recently, the positive impacts of globalization are prevalent (common) in almost every part of the world. Multinational companies are successfully operating in different continents and this generates (creates) jobs for the local people. In addition, they contribute to the growth of the economy of those countries where their businesses run because of the massive tax that they pay to the government. Moreover, from a business perspective, multinational companies reach a wider audience with their products or services which help them serve more people and, hence, increase their annual revenue. All these positive things are a product of globalization and everyone gets the benefits.

However, people must not ignore the negative impacts that globalization brings to people and the environment. Take, for instance, the exploitation (the abuse of; taking advantage of) of laborers in developing nations who work in some international fast fashion (trendy clothes at astonishingly low prices) companies. Some of them are forced to work beyond the normal working hours (more than eight hours) because of the high demand for clothes, yet, they are underpaid. Also, the factory waste that those international companies create from the production of their products is undeniably degrading (spoiling; destroying) to the environment. These important problems that multinational companies bring must also be taken into account (to consider or remember something when judging a decision).

In conclusion, globalization is impacting people’s lives and businesses positively but people must also recognize that it also has its downsides.
