IELTS WRITING: SUPPORT TOWARDS INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

in TASK 2 ESSAY

IELTS Writing Task 2:

Some people believe famous people’s support towards international aid organizations draws attention to problems, while others think celebrities make the problems less important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

SAMPLE ESSAY

It is thought that the support given by prominent people to international charity organizations makes the problems known, however, many believe that those people simply overshadow the issues.  In my opinion, I believe the problems will certainly be given more importance when those people publicize their humanitarian work with the organizations.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Prominent [adj.] – important; famous  Overshadow [verb] – appear more important than Publicize [verb] – announce; make widely known Humanitarian [adj.] – having concern for improving the welfare and happiness of people

To begin with,  public figures’ support of international aid organizations raises people’s awareness about the problems and I agree with that. Those famous people can easily educate or influence the public since they have a platform where they can easily disseminate information about world issues that common people are not aware of. For example, the Hollywood actress and UNHCR ambassador, Angelina Jolie, has traveled the world to spread awareness about the conditions of refugees from different parts of the world. As a spokesperson of the organization, she has educated millions of people about the struggles of refugees and informed the public on how they can help. As a result, more people have become aware and concerned about the problem which has led them to give donations to the organization as well.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Public figure [noun] – a famous person  Raise [verb] – bring something to one’s attention  Awareness [noun] – knowledge of a situation or fact  Disseminate [verb] – spread widely

On the other hand, it is often believed that the problems are not given more value when famous people show their support to those organizations. This is simply because the public is more interested in the celebrities themselves than the work that they do with the organization. In other words, when they go to the public and talk about world problems, some people do not care about their advocacy because they are simply fixated on the fact that they are watching a celebrity in person. In addition, the media usually highlight the celebrities’ persona rather than the problems that they are working with the organization because it is more appealing to their audiences. Therefore, all these things make those main problems trivial.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Advocate [verb as used in the sentence] – to publicly recommend or support  Fixated [adj.] – be obsessed  Highlight [verb] – draw special attention to  Persona [noun] – the aspect of someone’s character that is presented to or perceived by others Trivial [adj.] – unimportant

To conclude, despite people having different opinions, I think the problems will be highlighted and supported even more when the help of famous people towards international organizations is made public.
