IELTS WRITING: DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF CRIME SCENES

IELTS Writing Task 2:

Some people think that detailed descriptions of crime scenes on TV and in newspapers have a bad influence on the public, so this kind of information should be prohibited. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ESSAY

It is thought that sensationalized news about certain crimes like murder that is broadcast on TV and published in newspapers has a negative impact on the general public. According to some people, banning this kind of news is important and I agree with them as this will stop causing other societal problems.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Sensationalize [verb] – making something worse or more shocking

Ban [verb] – stop; prohibit

Societal [adj.] – relating to the society or social relations

First of all, the prohibition of reporting specific sensitive information about a particular crime is needed to simply protect the audience, most especially the young audiences. These days, parents do not always have time to look after their children and provide parental guidance when they are watching some TV programs that are not oriented to their age.  When a child sees a news report on violence unintentionally without parents’ guidance, they might imitate it by inflicting harm on other children when they are angered.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Look after [phrasal verb] – to take care of someone

Inflict [verb] – cause something unpleasant to be suffered by someone

Another reason why it is necessary to ban sensationalized news on crimes is that it will stop deranged individuals from thinking of committing crimes. This means that those people who have tendencies to commit a crime will not be influenced by those detailed news reports. For example, the reports of the shooting incidents in America in the last decade are oftentimes done by mentally ill individuals, whose pattern of executing the crime is apparently identical to the previous incidents that were sensationally reported by the media. If only the media had censored those very detailed sensitive reports, those types of people would not have copied and carried out the same act of violence.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Trigger [verb] – to cause to happen; causes someone to have an extreme reaction of anger, frustration, etc.

Deranged [adj.] – mad; insane

Identical [adj.] – similar; alike

Censor [verb] – to remove something that is harmful, offensive, immoral, etc to society

In addition, prohibiting news outlets from sensationalizing their reports can save highly sensitive people from experiencing depression or anxiety. Studies show that highly sensitive people suffer from psychological issues if they watch some news programs that describe a criminal act in a detailed manner. Banning those kinds of reports can protect those kinds of people from going through mental disorders.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Highly sensitive person [noun] – is a term for those who are thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli.

Mental disorder [noun] – a wide range of conditions that affect mood, thinking, and behavior Source: Highly Sensitive Person

To conclude, the prohibition of publishing descriptive news reports on certain crimes is extremely important for the benefit of the entire community.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Descriptive [adj.] – describing something in a detailed way

Community [noun] – a group of people living in the same place
