IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: PRAISE OR ENCOURAGEMENT [ANSWERS]

How do you feel when you are praised? To be honest, it makes me feel a bit shy, and I often get a bit flustered! I believe thatโ€™s because Iโ€™m an introvert, and I donโ€™t like to be put in the spotlight. But deep down, I feel good because it gives me a real sense of validation.

Praising or encouraging a child, a worker, a sibling, a parent, and the like is one of the recent IELTS Speaking Part 1 topics. The use of expressions, such as ‘Well done’, ‘Great job’, and the like, is what you can also use when answering questions about commendation.ย

The sample answers to the topic questions of praising or encouraging in this post give you ideas on how to converse with the examiner in a more natural and conversational way. Study the sample answers below and express yourself confidently.ย  ย

In this post, youโ€™ll learn:

  • How to structure a high-scoring answer (with 2 real examples).
  • IELTS-specific vocabulary related to praising or encouraging someone.

Letโ€™s dive into the sample answers!

PART 1

PRAISE OR

ENCOURAGEMENT

Have you had any achievements recently? ย

(Answer 1) ย

Yes, but I wouldnโ€™t say itโ€™s a huge one, but Iโ€™m pretty chuffed (pleased) about finally getting the hang of (learning to do something well) typing fast on a computer. Itโ€™s been months since I couldnโ€™t improve my typing speed. I was stuck at 80 words per minute until I spent time practicing and finally broke my record, mastering 100 words per minute.ย  ย

(Answer 2)

Actually, yes! I recently managed to hit a personal milestone (a personal achievement), which is saving $1,000 for two months. It wasnโ€™t a walk in the park (easy) since I had to discipline myself, saying no to my friendsโ€™ eat-out invites, and suppressing my urge to shop online. ย

How do you feel when you are praised? ย

(Answer 1) ย

To be honest, it makes me feel a bit shy, and I often get a bit flustered (nervous or confused)! I believe thatโ€™s because Iโ€™m an introvert, and I donโ€™t like to be put in the spotlight. But deep down, I feel good because it gives me a real sense of validation (confirmation that my feelings/efforts are justified). ย

(Answer 2)

Of course, I feel happy when I get commendation (praise) from others. Iโ€™m the kind of person who really needs that external validation, so I know whether or not Iโ€™m doing things right. So when someone praises me, especially for something Iโ€™ve worked hard on, it just makes my day, and it encourages me to keep doing well.ย  ย

When was the last time you praised someone? ย

(Answer 1) ย

Well, just yesterday! I talked with my niece on WhatsApp after I learned that she won a spelling competition at her school. As I praised her, her face just lit up, and that made me realize how important it is to give praise to someone, especially when they make a great effort to achieve things.ย  ย

(Answer 2)

Well, I praised my colleague a couple of days ago. This is because sheโ€™s able to handle a very difficult customer with so much patience and professionalism. Honestly, if I were in her shoes, I wouldnโ€™t be able to tolerate the unpleasant behavior of a customer shown to my colleague. Sheโ€™s commendable (deserving praise) for going above and beyond (doing more than expected or required). ย

Do you think parents should often praise or encourage their children? ย

(Answer 1)

Yes, I believe so. Consistent encouragement helps build a childโ€™s self-esteem from the ground up. Thatโ€™ll have a huge impact on their adult life. Well, when I was a kid, I rarely got that even though I was being a good kid, and I believe thatโ€™s the reason why I feel so shy when I get praise from my manager or co-workers at work. ย

(Answer 2)

Yes, without a doubt. That makes them feel confident about themselves. However, I think thereโ€™s a fine line (a small difference between two things). Praise should be balanced; it shouldnโ€™t be given too much, otherwise it might lose its meaning. The key is to motivate them to be resilient and confident in themselves. ย
