IELTS WRITING: RESTORATION OF OLD BUILDINGS

IELTS Writing Task 2:

The restoration of old buildings in major cities in the world costs enormous government expenditure. This money should be used for new housing and road development. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ESSAY

Different governments around the world are spending a massive amount of money to restore century-old buildings in the metropolis (main city). Some people believe that the money should be spent on free housing programs and constructing new roads, instead, and I partly agree with it.

Restoring old buildings, especially those historic buildings is essential in any government as they are part of the history of a country. In addition, they serve as reminders of a country’s culture and tradition, and of how ancestors fought for their right to be independent from their colonizers. Also, those buildings help the country’s tourism industry as they attract travelers from different parts of the world. For example, the Colosseum in Italy and the Great Wall of China, among others, help boost (improve) the annual revenue of tourism in those countries. Thus, investing a huge amount of money in restoring those types of buildings is not problematic.

However, I believe, governments should be selective (choosy) in spending their money on the restoration of old buildings. They have to choose those old buildings with historical and cultural significance, otherwise, those buildings that are of no value must be demolished, especially if they pose risks to the general public. The government of any country, then, allocates (distributes some financial resources for a particular purpose) some money to build better roads and houses for people who cannot afford to buy or rent a house. In this way, the financial resources of any government will be maximized (make the best use of) and used in a more meaningful way.

To conclude, spending money on the restoration of old buildings with historical and cultural value is as important as building more roads and providing free houses to underprivileged citizens. Any government must make sure to address these two for the betterment of the country and its people.

Houses are essential for people. Some people think that the government should offer free houses for people who cannot afford to pay for them. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
