IELTS Speaking PART 1: Riding A Bike

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1:

RIDING A BIKE

TOPIC Questions and

ANSWERS

Is it popular to ride a bicycle in your country?

(Answer 1)

Yes, I believe so because I can see lots of salarymen (men who work in an office for a salary) riding a bike to work. Also, some school graders go to school by bike, especially in our city. For me, that’s killing two birds with one stone (to achieve two things by doing a single action) – they help reduce pollution, and at the same time, they keep themselves fit.

(Answer 2)

Based on my observation, it’s popular in some places but not in the entire country. There are some places that aren’t safe for bikes since there aren’t bicycle lanes. But bicycles are a common mode of transport in the countryside, and every time I return to my hometown, I usually ride a bike to go somewhere.

Do you often ride a bike now?

(Answer 1)

Unfortunately, I don’t know how to ride a bike. I tried learning when I was a kid but fell off (dropped unintentionally to the ground) many times and injured myself until I decided to give up learning. Now, that I’m an adult, I don’t think I’ll give it a shot (try) learning again.

(Answer 2)

I ride a bike only when I stay in my hometown. I enjoy cycling there because there aren’t many cars on the road and it has scenic (picturesque) views. I wish I could do that in the city.

Did you have a bike when you were young?

(Answer 1)

Yes, I did!  My dad bought a bicycle when I turned 6 years old. It was color red and the brand name was Woom. I remember I was so eager  (wanting to do) to ride on it and my dad was so patient in teaching me how to balance when I pedaled  (move by working the pedals of a bicycle).

(Answer 2)

I didn’t have one but I had a scooter when I was a kid. I only had a bicycle when I became thirteen. I was encouraged  (to give confidence or support) by my friends to learn how to ride a bike because they wanted me to join them in their cycling adventure every weekend. I could never forget how my friends taught me how to ride a bike.

Did you ride a bike when you were little?

(Answer 1)

Yes, I usually spent my weekend riding a bike in the park with my father. That was one of the best memories I had as a child. Also, my dad took me to different cycle tracks (routes that run along the side of a road for the use of people riding bicycles) in different places in our town and that helped me improve my confidence in cycling.

(Answer 2)

As I said, I only had a scooter when I was a child so I didn’t get to experience riding a bike when I was little. I think I wasn’t interested in it because my playmates then  (at that time) only had a scooter as well. None of us had a bicycle.

Did you ride a bike to school?

(Answer 1)

Not at all. It’s impossible to ride a bike to school because my high school wasn’t a stone’s throw  (a short distance). And when I was a university student, I lived in an apartment that’s only a few walks from my school. So, I didn’t need to ride a bike.

(Answer 2)

Yes, I did in my high school because our school was only two kilometers away from my house. Most of the time, I rode a bike when I went to school as I didn’t want to go to school on foot  (walking). But of course, I didn’t do that when the weather was bad.

Do you ride a bike when you go out now?

(Answer 1)

Yes, I do because it’s my way of exercising. I cycle to the supermarket or to the park since they’re not that far. I think it’s only 4 kilometers away from my house. But if it’s too hot outside, I avoid cycling because it’s not ideal  (suitable). It only makes me feel sick.

(Answer 2)

I do, sometimes. If I’m in the mood to go to the beach or park nearby, I ride a bike so I can exercise and at the same time enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. Well, just last weekend, I rode a bike to the beach with my two friends and it made us reminisce  (look back on) about our teens because that’s what we usually did on weekends when we were teenagers.
