DESCRIBE A PERSON WHO LIKES TO MAKE THINGS BY HAND

IELTS Cue Card: Describe A Person Who Likes To Make Things By Hand recent cue card and sample answer.

Study how the story is developed by the speaker talking about a person who likes to make things by hand.  Understand how he organized the details of his monologue and how he strategized by using topic words and collocations.

PART 2

DESCRIBE A PERSON WHO

LIKES TO MAKE THINGS BY

HAND

Describe a person who likes to make things by hand

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • What he/she makes
  • Why he/she likes to make things by hand

And explain how you felt about this person

A N S W E R

The only person that comes to mind is Tom Daley. He’s one of the most decorated Olympians (an Olympian who receives a lot of medals or awards) from the UK who loves knitting.    I first knew about his interest in knitting (making a garment by interlocking loops of wool or yarn with knitting needles or on a machine) way back in 2021 when he competed in the Tokyo Olympics. The media spotted him knitting a cardigan on the poolside while watching his fellow diving competitors.

The finished cardigan was posted on his Instagram and I can say that that was beautifully crafted (beautifully made). The cardigan has the UK flag on the left shoulder and the letters GBR on the right. On the back of it is the logo of the Olympics and the front has the kanji characters which mean Tokyo Olympics. It was impressive and undeniably people loved it.

Anyway, I saw one of his interviews about his knitting hobby and I learned that he only started knitting during the pandemic. He said that it was really hard, however, he got the hang of (mastered; learned how to do something) it through consistent practice. His first project was a scarf which was given to his mom. He also said that knitting was his way of feeling mindful and a way of escaping the thought of competing.

What’s more (in addition to) interesting is that he published some of his patterns and sold them on LoveCrafts.com to raise money for The Brain Tumor Charity. That, I think is commendable (admirable; praiseworthy) and I don’t think many athletes do that.

PART 3

How does modern technology change the handicraft industry?

I believe the production has increased because handicraft artists use some advanced tools that would save them time and make their jobs lighter. For example, woodworkers or furniture makers use sanding machines, grinders, and screw drill machines to easily assemble pieces of wood into furniture and smoothen (to smooth the surface) it. Doing this in the past took longer as there weren’t helpful tools. Thanks to (because of) modern technology handicraft artists make their handicraft items more excellent.

Is it reasonable to charge a high price for handmade things?

Of course! Handicraft artists spend a lot of time and effort in producing handmade items. Doing so isn’t a walk in the park (something that’s very easy to accomplish). Besides, they utilize their creativity to produce such items which cannot easily be replicated. So, it’s just right for them to price their artwork the value they think it deserves. In my opinion, people must not cheapen (reduce the price) the work of an artist.

Why do many children like to make things by hand?

I think that’s because children are in the stage of developing their motor skills and creativity. They’re curious about creating or operating something. One good example of this is playing Lego. Children spend a lot of time figuring out (to understand something) how to make something out of those small pieces of Lego. They’re learning so much from it which is helpful in the development of their motor skills and creative thinking skills. Therefore, parents should allow their children to make things by hand because that’s part of their learning.

Are traditional handicrafts important to tourism?

Yes, definitely! Those traditional handicrafts are a representation of the tradition and culture of a country. Those are cultural treasures (unique objects that are extraordinarily valuable to a particular group) that need to be preserved and appreciated. Besides, selling those to tourists helps the local economy prosper (do well) as it generates jobs for the local community. In other words, traditional handicrafts promote education and business.
