IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: PATIENCE [ANSWERS]

Were you patient when you were young? Yes, I was, I was really patient. That’s because of my dad, he’s a disciplinarian - he didn’t want me to easily get what I wanted when I was a child. Like if I wanted to have a new toy, I had to work for it - helping my mom with the house chores, and after that, I was rewarded with the toy that I wanted to have. But to be honest, I’m forever grateful to my dad because he taught me one important lesson in life.

PART 1

PATIENCE/BEING PATIENT

ANSWERS

Are you a patient person?

(Answer 1)

It’s such a shame to admit that I am not. I easily lose my temper, especially when I need to wait for someone or when I need to be in a long queue. That drives me crazy.

(Answer 2)

Yes absolutely! My parents taught me the significance of patience when I was a child. They said that it’s an important virtue that I should cultivate in order for me to achieve great things in life. And to be honest, they’re really right as I wouldn’t have become the man I am today if I had not developed myself being patient.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

It’s such a shame [expression] – used to say that something is very unfortunate

Admit [verb] – acknowledge; confess

Lose temper [expression] – to become very angry

Queue [noun] – a line of people waiting for their turn to be attended

Virtue [noun] – behavior; goodness

Cultivate [verb] – develop

TIPS

i.) FIRST ANSWER: The speaker gave a straightforward answer to the examiner by using a very good and natural expression (It’s such a shame…). Then he provided a situation that supports his answer as to why he’s impatient. If you can use good expressions confidently, don’t hesitate to use them as it will help boost your score in Lexical Resource.

ii.) SECOND ANSWER: The speaker provided a very short and straightforward answer in the beginning then he recalled how he learned the value of patience to support his answer. Recalling the past event will surely help you make your answer in Part 1 more substantial but always remember to not overdo it as you should never make your answer very long on this part. The last sentence of the examiner was grammar-wise – the speaker used a third-conditional tense. This surely raises his Grammar mark.

Were you patient when you were young?

(Answer 1)

I don’t have lots of memories of my childhood, I’m not sure. Maybe I was or maybe I wasn’t. However, it’s just so common among kids to easily lose patience as they don’t know how to control their emotions yet. Well, perhaps there were times that I was patient, and there may be some times that I wasn’t.

(Answer 2)

Yes, I was, I was really patient. That’s because of my dad, he’s a disciplinarian – he didn’t want me to easily get what I wanted when I was a child. Like if I wanted to have a new toy, I had to work for it – helping my mom with the house chores, and after that, I was rewarded with the toy that I wanted to have. But to be honest, I’m forever grateful to my dad because he taught me one important lesson in life.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Perhaps [adv.] – another way to say maybe

Disciplinarian [noun] – a person who believes and practices firm beliefs or discipline

Grateful [adj.] – thankful; expressing gratitude

TIPS

i.) FIRST ANSWER: The speaker started his answer by telling the examiner about the uncertainty of his childhood experiences. He was so unsure of whether or not he was patient, then in order for him to talk a bit more, he transitioned to describing the general attitude of children. This is wise since he didn’t have any memory of his childhood, by talking about the attitude of children in a general way, he was able to stretch his answer. It’s an effective technique!

ii.) SECOND ANSWER: The speaker gave a straightforward positive answer to the question and started talking about his childhood, especially the time when he learned the value of patience.  He shared how his father taught him how to be a patient child and ended his answer by expressing how grateful he was for his father. This is a very good way to support his argument about being patient.

How do you feel when people are not patient?

Well, I don’t really mind because I don’t want to be stressed out with negative things or things that don’t add value to my life. As long as I’m not the reason or the cause of their impatience, I won’t be affected at all. However, I tend to be so sensitive and apologetic if I cause their impatience like being late for a meetup.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

I don’t mind [expression] – on the aforementioned answer, it simply means that he doesn’t care

Stressed out [adj.] – being anxious, tired, irritable

Impatience [noun] – restlessness; the lack of patience

Apologetic [adj.] – regretful

TIP

i.) The speaker simply provided two kinds of situations that would best describe his feelings or reactions about people being impatient. Since there is no one answer that fits all to this type of question, the best way to answer this is to talk about two situations and explain each.

Who is more patient, men or women?

(Answer 1)

I don’t want to sound stereotypical, but I believe both genders can be more patient or impatient depending on the situation. All of us have the tendency to stretch our patience as much as we can bear, but if it reaches the point when we can no longer handle it, we surely lose our cool.

(Answer 2)

I believe it’s women who have more patience than men because women by nature are really patient. I mean, only women have the ability to bear a child for nine months and imagine the struggle or the pain they feel before and after they deliver a child. With that, I’m really confident that women are born to be patient more than men.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Stereotypical [adj.] – having fixed or oversimplified idea or image of a certain person or thing

Tendency [noun] – propensity; an inclination toward a particular characteristic

Stretch (our) patience [expression] – extend patience

Lose our cool [expression] – become very angry

Unfavorable [adj.] – unacceptable

Bear a child [expression] – to carry a baby inside a woman’s womb for nine months

TIPS

i.) FIRST ANSWER: The way the speaker started his answer is very honest, making the examiner understand his belief that he’s not biased at all in terms of gender. He explained the general idea that both are just the same in terms of being patient and impatient. This is a realistic answer!

ii.) SECOND ANSWER: The speaker based his answer on the reality of women. The fact that they can bear a child is what makes him believe that they are more patient than men. It is a well-explained argument that makes his answer great.
