IELTS WRITING Task 2:
Parents should encourage their children to spend less time studying and more time on physical activities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ESSAY
Some people think that parents have to motivate their children to allot (give; assign; divide) more time to do physical activities than studying. In my opinion, I disagree with the idea as both are equally important in a child’s development.
Studying the lessons that are taught in school is as important as spending time doing physical activities. It is essential (necessary) because it helps the students recall the valuable lessons they learned at school. When they spend time reviewing what their teachers have taught them, they will be able to absorb (to take in) those lessons even more, and as a result, they will not easily forget them. Another important point to take note of when students spend a good amount of time studying is that they will learn to develop research skills. This is because they have to prepare to study the lessons in advance by answering homework assigned to them by their teachers. If parents encourage their children to lessen (minimize) their time studying and spend more time on physical activities, they will not be able to develop their full potential in the academic (studying) field.
On the other hand, making children spend more time on physical activities than studying is not very helpful in their development. While doing activities such as sports is making children develop a healthy lifestyle, it is detrimental (harmful) to their health when it is done excessively. In addition to that, their studies will be taken for granted (to value lightly) since they prioritize those physical activities, and that will take a toll on (to have a serious and bad effect on something) their grades which causes a serious problem. So, instead of giving more focus to physical activities than studying, parents have to motivate their children to spend an equal amount of time in their studies and in doing extra-curricular activities (activities that are not part of the usual school or college course).
To conclude, the amount of time for studying and doing physical activities should be equal since they are both important in a child’s development. Parents must understand that those two are needed in their child’s growth and they should not influence their child to focus more on one thing over the other.
